Miguel Enríquez Vive !
Comrade Miguel Enríquez was a communist revolutionary and co-founder of Chile’s Movement of the Revolutionary Left (MIR). Following the U.S.-backed fascist coup on Sept. 11, 1973, the MIR led the political-military resistance to the Pinochet dictatorship.
After a year in clandestinity, Army Intelligence (DINA) uncovered his safe-house in Santiago. On October 5, 1974, his house was surrounded by DINA agents backed by heavily-armed security forces with an armored personnel carrier and helicopter. Enriquez resisted, remaining alone in the ensuing hours-lasting gun battle, covering the retreat of his pregnant wife and two other men that fled. He died of ten bullet wounds, including one to the head.
